MN Legislation is getting close to passing new laws restricting teen drivers. The laws would:
1) Make it illegal for teens to drive between midnight and 5am during the first 6 months after getting their drivers license.
2) May only have ONE teen in the car with them during the first 6 months of having a license.
3) During the second 6 months, a teen driver cold only have 3 or fewer other teens in the car with them.
This laws would not restrict the number of family members allowed in the car.
What do you think? Should it be passed???

I think that this is a good idea. I have had my license for a long time now and these rules wouldn't affect me. I think that 16 year olds shouldn't have a lot of distractions when driving. I don't think that kids should be driving around in the middle of the night. Most 16 year olds have a curfew that is at 12 so you would this those kids would be driving before then.
I think this is kind of ridiculous, I think that the curfew time is ridiculous, some teens work late night hours in the summer, and if you cannot drive after midnight then what are you suppose to do? Yes they shouldnt have much distraction, but now that the prices of gas is going up, you are going to want more people to car pool in order to save on gas, and money. No this law should not be passes. It is riduculous
This isn't a bad idea, but I think it would be difficult to enforce it. How many police officers are going to pull over people because they suspect that they haven't had there license for 6 months. I don't know how would they enforce it efficiently without pulling over people who have had there license for a year and getting them mad.
I think it's a good idea. The kids that would be out after that time driving around are probably the ones who would be out causing mischief. Kids need the time and practice when they get their license and not with 5 other people in the car. Friends can be distracting and it would be a good idea to limit how many can be in the car.
This is a good idea for safety matters but with the prcie of gas, more people are going to want to car pool with their friends and this would restrict them from doing that for a while. The law about not driving after midnight would kind of be hard to enforce since it would be dark out and it would be difficult to see if a teen was driving or not. It 's a law that wouldn't affect me so they can pass it and i wouldn't care.
Though these laws would not have a big affect on me, I think it is kind of a stupid idea. These young teens wouldn't be able to carpool, and with the gas prices the way they are now, it would be hard to even go anywhere with your sixteen year old friends. Plus, it would probably be hard to enforce these laws, because you cant just pull someone over because they look like they might be a sixteen year old.
This is a good idea to stop the amount of teen deaths that occur because of driving, but it is kind of out of the question to ask a person to only bring one person with them when driving. This will totally waste gas and kids wont be able to car pool like we do now. Also, what about the people who have to drive late at night. Not everyone is home by that time and must drive late.
I think this law is good because alot of the teen accidents that occur are from inexperienced drivers becoming distracted. Also about the driving in the night restriction this could be good because alot of accidents occur during those hours.
i think is crap. first off if they are driving after midnight cops cant pull them over because that is profiling and that is wrong. they would first have to have some reasone to pull them over. second driving at that time isnt such a big deal seriously the kids that are getting to accidents at that time are drinking or they are getting hit by a drunk driver i think the police should try to be more effecitve on getting drunk drivers not on teenagers. just becaseu they are young does not mean they are the reasone for all the accidents. look at old people to they seriouly some of them should not be driving at all. hugo took ten mins to back his car up and out of the cenex parking lot the other day that is the reason for accidents.
I think that this is a smart idea. Kids are just not ready to drive at such a young age. We are still kind of immature and having other kids in the car with us only makes it worse. I also think that they should do something about cell phones and teens. I do think that this would be hard to enforce though.
It won't make a difference. If you want to drive around you are going to, regardless of the amount of people in your car. What's this law supposed to do? Lower the amount of accidents? Doubtful. It's just another stereotypical judgement of teens that they all suck at driving and shouldn't be on the road. If that's the case, why not make the license age higher? I'm sure the entire teen population would move to South Dakota, where the legal age is 14, but who needs teens anyways.
I think that this would keep teens out of trouble but if I was a teen and was getting together with some friends, it would suck because we would have to drive seperate vehicles. Not all teens do bad stuff, and they should be responsible enough to behave as adults.
This is and isnt a good idea. Some kids have a job that you may have to work late. But the 16 year olds should have any distractions. but if you really think about it, do you think the kids will follow the rules? Kids do need time and practice when they get their license and not with other kids in the car to distract them.
I agree with Rachael. New drivers should be focusing on the roads other than their passangers. But those who have jobs and work into late hours of the night hor are they going to deal with that. Gas prices are rising so car pooling is the best solution to save yourself and others money. I dont think this law should be passed.
I think that this bill would be pointless. I'm sure most teen wouldnt even pay attention to the bill and then when they do get pulled over with 5 friends in the car what are the police going to do? make them walk home? I guess this would be really amazing for oil companies considering that there will be less people in cars but more cars on the road.
this is takeing our right to drive away
it is a good idea but not so long of a time periode because alot of familys there brothers and sisters haqve to take them to sports ect.
i think this is an outrageaous bill it starts to take away the rights of an american learning to drive and paying attention is very important but people should start using more common sense.
Who is going to follow this law? I agree with Tamra gas is to much to be driving by yourself. Just because your out late dont mean your getting into trouble!!! I think this law is retarded and they should make it harder to get your license not so many stupid laws.
I think this is so stupid. They think they can solve the state's problems but they can't. Sure it might cut down on accidents but it is mostly the older population that accidents occur in.
Bullgus! That's what I say.Period. I have friends in MI who have some of these similar laws affecting them and it stinks. Curfews should be up to the parents and with the rising gas prices?! I now that even when I started driving, my friends and I carpooled ALL the TIME!
I dont think that this is bad idea because i have had my license for a long time now so im not really concerned that these rules will affect me. i think that new drivers that should have a lot of distractions because they should be focusing on the road that is how accidents happen and most kids do have curfew at 12 anyways so i dont think it is a big deal
I think that this is a good idea because teens are still learning and are easily distracted if they have a lot of people with them. I dont think that 16 year olds need to be out that late they say nothing good happens after midnight lol
The old folggies should have some type of laws past for them.. they're some of the worst drivers out there. I think that 16 year olds are extra cautious because they just got thier licence and are new to driving. These laws are stupid and i hope that they don't pass.
If i were a sixteen year old again i would be pissed and extremelyl chapped because this a really stupid idea. passangers in a vehicle are not a distraction they are merely friends riding along an dhaveing agood time if the 16 year old driver goes in the ditch jsut means they the BLOW at driving if some one is more worried about their conversation with their passengers than whats in front of them, and their lives then they should go to Helsinki Finland..!!!!!!
i think that this is dumb because lets kids do what they want what does it matter if there is kids with them or not whos says that they wont do the same thing in 6 months anyways i doesnt sound like a good idea
this is a good idea. i guess for people who are used to driving around with a car full of friends on a regular basis wouldn't like this but thats okay. and teenagers under 18 aren't legally allowed to work after midnight so they have no reason to be out that late anyways. our friends can be a great deal of a distraction and this way there is time to learn the basics before having friends drive with you.
good new drivers are crap. i dont care who you are for the first few monnths you suck at driving. deal with it you lil sophmores. deal with it. bob dole.
yea i agree with these provisions, when i started driving i realized that it is so easy to get into a dangerous situation and that anysmall thing can be a tragic distraction. thank you governemnt for making these dumb kids have no fun!!!
I think it would be good and make the roads safer but if I was in that situation I think it would be dumb and wouldn't like it. If they are going make laws for young drivers then the legislature should make laws for really old drivers.
no i dont think this is a good idea. with gas going up kids are car pooling more and more and i think you should be able to drive whatever time of night who cares if its 3 in the morning. if there not harming anyone then why does it matter what time is it?
This may be a good idea. Teens are in alot of accidents because they are distracted by other things or people. I would be mad if i was younger but im not so pass it if it helps.
yeah that would be dumb, but whatever who cares
i think it's ridiculous! It's just one more thing they are trying to take away from us teens. If they won't limit the number of family members then why put a limit on your friends. Your family can be just as a big as a distraction as your friends.
Yeah i guess this is pretty much a dumb bill..the kids that aren't responsible enough to drive safe with people in their car don't deserve liscenses. plus what a great way to take away yet another freedom. Get out of our lives government.
I think in ways this could help lower accidents but some kids so need to drive later then 12 like the kids that work late or need to go home for something i don't think its really fair to them but it would help
