Youngest Mayors in US

Sam Juhl of Roland, Iowa is among the youngest mayors in the US. He ran for mayor unopposed in 2005 and won-he was a high school senior at the time. He ran again in 2007 and won 57% of the vote. He is now running for State Representative.

Michael Sessions of Hillsdale, Michigan also won in 2005 while he was a senior in high school. He, however, did not run unopposed. Sessions defeated incumbent mayor Doug Ingles, age 51, as a WRITE-IN candidate.

Christopher Seeley was also elected mayor in 2005. Seeley was a high school senior when he won the election in Linesville, Pennsylvania. He ran against long-time Linesville Borough Council Member Kevin McGrath.

All three are still serving as mayor. How's that for Government in Action credit???

These "mayors" that got elected to office are likely just the part of some joke that actually got them elected in on accident. These students are most likely unaware of the issues that the community faces, and only one that has been through the problems that the community has should earn the title of mayor. If it were me that got voted in as mayor by some stupid write in, i would step down and let someone who actually cares about city politics be in office. More power to them if they actually want this.

Man i think its great that these nice young, attractive and intelligent young men are becoming so active in their communities. i think its great that people are looking past the issue of age and are voting for people they feel will have a positive impact on their community. I am personally suprised that people are not using the old grey hair and comb over test to decide who they will vote for

I think that this is kind of sweet but kind of sad. If they wanted to be mayor i guess i would say congratulations to winning at such a young age. But if they won as a write in then you know that this must be some kind of joke that people thought would be funny. Now they have a teenager running their city who probably knows nothing or very little on politics and on issues concerning their town. If i were them, i also would step down becuase it is not fair to the people who actually ran for it and didn't get it based on a joke.

I think that it is great that these kids are so active in their government already. I also think that for a town to put that much faith into a young person is a positive thing. You hear people saying that our generation is lazy and everything else but these kids prove that we can lead. I think that it is especially cool that they beat older people and incumbants.

as alex said this is supose to be some kind of joke. well it looks like the kids from Iowa must be a pretty good mayor. be not only did he win once and he won a second time. and he is now runnin for State Representative. you tell him that its a joke that he is mayor.

I think it is good that young people got voted in as mayors. I think that they can bring alot of change to this country if we would speak up more, but people do not wnat to speak up about different things. I think that some people are to scared to run for mayor or just think that they would never make it. I think that it would be good for this country if we had more young people running it.

I think that it is kinda sweet but super sad. I would say congratulations to them if they won and if i lived in that town but other than that it is kinda of a big joke. It is sad to me to see such young kids who are running and becoming a mayor. A senior in high school they know so little and they probably know very little on politics and issues concerning their town. If i was them i would step down because it would not be fair for the people who actually ran for it and didnt get it all because of a kid who thinks he knows alot but doesnt

It kind of sweet that they managed to get in as mayor. The one guy is especially impressive being that he won twice and wants to run for state represenative. I agree with megan that this really shows what our generation is capable of.

It was not a joke! The student who ran as a write in HAD to because he was not old enough to get his name on the ballot at the time of the deadline for doing so9he was only 17).

Each of these people WANTED to be mayor. It was not some cruel prank played on them.

I think that it is pretty cool there are young people getting involved in their community. And the one guy must have done a good job if he got it twice. This is impressive because a young mind can bring in a different prospective to the community.

It sounds like it started out as a joke but to win the election again like the first guy did is kinda crazy. Being a senior now i wouldnt know enough to become a mayor. He must have done some things right because he was elected the second time and will be running for State Representative. The kid who won as a write in sounds kind of wierd and a big joke. I guess it is good for them though because they seem to be successful at a young age.

If these young men are dedicated members in the community and know the responsibilities that the job has; all I can say is "GO FOR IT!!" These men will more than likely have a very bright political future ahead of them.

I think this is very a interesting situation. Do they really wanna be mayor as a teenager, or is it just some hoax, something funny to do. It's cool if they are still mayor and serving in office. I hope they do well if they are going to take it seriously!

I think that this is kinda rediculous these students would hardly know the issues that face them and they dont have much experience but yeah I guess all the more power to them. I would think that the community would have some more valueable adult citizens

I think it's awesome that these kids were able to be elected but I'm a little unsure on how well they would do because they can't have that much experience with the issues they have to deal with.

I think it's great that kids want to get involved in the government, but to be mayor of a town? Seems a bit suspicious. Why would adults elect a "kid" to be mayor? If they really know what they're doing and are helping their cities then great! I'm happy for them, but with a job like that comes responsibility. Hopefully it's a good thing.

I think that this is pretty sweet. Kids that are still in highschool running for mayor, and winning, crazy.they must be super smart or just super lucky to get in an win, but i hope the best for them and good luck

I think if they are smart enough and know what they are doing then all the power to them!

I think that this situation shows that our generation can actually do something and not run around and kill people or get involved with drugs like many say our generation is doing. I also think that this gives those students a chacne to get our generations views and opinions across on many issues of today.

i think its kool that younger people are gettin involved with real politics the new generation will be leading someday so they have to start somewhere rite?

ya these young attractive men are quite the politicians... you gotta be good to be that young and make it into public office... hey maybe if they get some good solid conservative expirience they might make some good politicians down the road... but i highly doubt these guys could have gotten elected by a joke.... they wouldn't get near enough supportt...

young majors are not going to have as much political experiance as older ones. There would be some positive things about having a young major, but i think that it is better to have one that has more experiance and knows more about the world around them.

I this its kinda cool that they won but its kind of crazy that they would run a ton. To me its like a joke why don't they just run when they are older and have more experience. I personally would not vote for a teenage kid to run my town. What if a huge problem came up what would they do run to there mom and dad!

I think this is kind of sad that these kids got elected, I guarantee there was someone more qualified out there. I wonder what type of voter base would vote for someone who was 17. They probably just wanted to get whoever was mayor before out and they figured it would send a message with such a young kid. Apparently it is working out though so good for them.

logey loge said...

well what can i say. they are young and they are mayors and they seem to be doi8ng a good job. whats wrong with this picture. nothign in my opinion. they are probably better in office young because they arent pushed to have certain things passed by people that they are around alot. less corruption i mean.

Young Mayors are good because they have new ideas and im sure they will listen to all generations. As a young person i would hope that they would be open minded to all of the aspects of a community.

SadieS said...

i think it will give these cities a new view because they weren't rich and they more than likely had to work for a living before they got to be a mayor, so they will view things differently, which to me isn't necissarily a bad thing.

I just think that it is crazy that these guys actually go voted in as mayors. I personally would not put alot of the decisions for one town in the hands of a high school senior, but hey, maybe he was qualified and did a good job, he did get voted in again the next year. Alot of youth are actually dedicated to their communities and willing to take that extra step to help out. These guys took a few extra steps, or else as Alex said, there was some prank pulled. If that is the case and their is no dedication, I think it is a shame and these kids ought to step down and let a mature and more qualified individual take over.
