Another Letter Opportunity?????

A plan to banish sex offenders from social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook is moving through the Minnesota House. The bill from Representative Karla Bigham would prohibit sex offenders from using social sites that allow members under the age of 18. It would also authorize probation agents to search their computers and other online devices. The bill has the backing of Attorney General Lori Swanson. It won unanimous approval in the House Public Safety and Civil Justice Committee. Some of the representatives voiced support for even stricter restrictions on Internet use by sex offenders. Representative Chris DeLaForest says he would support cutting off Internet access altogether, as New Jersey has done for some sex offenders.

What do you think? Should sex offenders be kept off MySpace and Facebook? Do we want to restrict their Internet rights?

Write a letter to your rep. if you agree or disagree with this bill.

I think that this bill is a good idea. All the S.O's out there don't need internet rights because they abuse them anyway. I think that this bill would help out a lot to put a stop to online stocking.

I think this bill is a good idea because online stocking and and online predators is a real big problem. people now probably don't care because it's not them and they say that it won't happen to them. They don't know the people that it actually happens to therefore they don't care. Again i think that it's a good idea.

I like this idea! I don't like the idea of icky people being on sites that I use. It is part of a persons responsibilty to be careful online but even so its gross to think about a sex offender looking at your picture somewhere or printing it off.. eww.. Hopefully it would help w/ the kids who get involved in these situations.

I think that this would be a good bill to pass. Online preditors are getting way out of hand, but I am sure that they will still find away to get to online chat rooms.

I think that this bill is a good idea. I think that they should stay off the sites where they could harm people again. I think once they have screwed up once they should have some consequences for their actions.

i believe that this is a good idea to pass this bill. I would personally feel a lot safer about going onto these websites if i knew that the sexual predators were not able to get into these sites. Online predators are sick freaks, but i agree that they will probably find away to get back into them.

I believe this would be a very good bill to pass. Online predators should not be able to go onto sites where millions of people chat every single day. It is scary to think of how many stalkers there are in this world.

I think that this bill is a great idea because it will keep the sex offenders off social sites and keep them from stalking little girls and boys. i think this bill will allow younger kids a chance to go onto the internet and not have to worry about have some 50 year old guy coming to their house and having their way with them.

I think that almost everyone would agree that this would be an extremely good bill to pass. Sex offenders would still probably find ways to contact children but taking the internet away from them would probably help alot. I say that we just casterate these sick pricks but thats just me.

Most sex offenders relaps on there offense. These perverts shouldnt have there rights to talk to little kids!! This bill would be a really good bill to pass.Even thou it probably wont stop all them sickos but will maybe stop some of it.. Better than none

This is an excellent idea!! The internet is where sex offenders make their moves on people desperate for companionship. This would keep our younger generation safer and would allow them not to be as scared when browsing the internet. We all know how little girls are. They talk to any guy they can, and flirt like crazy. These perverts need to be striped of everything that we can possibly take away from them. We need to make them feel vulnerable...like they do to people.

I dont know how in the world they could stop someone from using the internet, but if possible, i think this is a good idea. In my opinion, anything that can slow down and prevent sexual predators is a good thing. It seems like if they were really that desperate to get some pictures they could find a way around it, but yeah, I am for it.

I think its a good idea. The sexual offenders don't need internet rights because they use the rights in the way they should be used. they abuse them. Stalkers are getting way outrageous. EW! but they wil somehow still find a way to on chat lines and stuff.

I think that no sex offenders should be allowed in chat rooms where minors are located. This is a great bill to protect kids under age and keep sex offenders away from a lot of people. However, they should not be banned from using the internet all together, especially if they have paid for their crimes.

I think that sex offenders should be kept off MySpace and Facebook. I also agree with what New Jersey has done by cutting off internet altogether. But telling sex offenders not to use internet, I am sure they will find some way to get on MySpace and Facebook. Plus it would be pretty hard to keep them off of.

I'm glad that they are finally deciding to curb the sex offenders on these web sites. I've found it pretty easy to access what they believe in as "private" areas of the site, and it's kind of pathetic that the poor security systems they claim to protect the younger constituents of their website can't even protect against a user that i can say is subpar compared to many of the more experienced computer hacker/rapists there is. Good work lady, good work.

i think that sex offenders should be kept off MySpace and Facebook. Especially from these sites because of the amount of children that use these sites. I don't know that we need to restrict their rights from the internet completely but it would help to prevent any ideas they would get about stalking little kids than it is definitely what should be done.

This is a good idea I believe if the offenders can't find a away around the limiting that the government will do. If this works it will be allow parents to feel a little more secure about their kids on the internet. This bill is a step in the right direction.

Sounds good, but I doubt it would be as successful in practice as people think. It's so easy to create a false online identity and gain internet access anywhere across the nation. It would undoubtedly discourage some and that's enough to make it worth while. Some people really do make it too easy for them to take advantage.

I don't think even sex offenders shouldn't be allowed any internet access at all.

i like this idea if they can find all of the sex affenders

they should make this happen all over the internet.

I think that this bill is a good idea. It would probably keep many kids safer; but the online predators will probably still find a way to get on these sites and some of them haven't been caught yet. Everyone would be a lot better off if they didn't put all their personal stuff on public internet sites in the first place.

i agree they should have thier rights from these social sites and internet restricted. but that is only for sex offenders that have allready comited a crime what about all the people out their that will become sex offenders. so yes it will cut it down a ton but dont think it will solve all the problems.

Sex offenders should not be allowed in chat rooms that are available to minors. They blew it and now they have to pay for it by having certain restraining orders. People have to think before they go ahead and do stuff that they will regret. There are consequences for actions.

this is awesome those sickos should not be able to get onto websites like that it just gives them Another chance to stalk little girls/boys.. its creepy knowing there are tons of sex offenders all over myspace and facebook and we dont even know it

ashlayy said...

but myspace and facebook is probly a good way to catch alot of online sex offenders because no matter what if they want to meet younger girls/boys they are still going to find a way to get an account
but its still a good idea tryin to protect the people who do have myspace and facebook.. ect

this bill is a good idea cuz i think there will be less people caught in this trap of being scared by a sex offender and the percentage i think would be less

I thinks that this bill is a good idea!! Online stalkers and online predators are sick people and are really creepy!! People say certain things will never happen to them but you really never know for sure. I hope this bill will stop these SICK PEOPLE!

i really like this idea... I dont like the idea of really creepy people on sites and talking to young girls they should stick to people there own age... I think that it is the peoples responsibilty to be careful online and they hsould only talk to people they know but it is gross just thinking about icky people looking for you or at your pictures ... I really hope that it helps kids who get into these situations....

absolutely! this is where they target youlng individuals! what better place for them to go than on a site where there are virtually thousands of young people! keep them off!

i think that a sex offender shouldnt have the same rights as normal citizens. they blew that oppertunity a while ago when they screwed up. ban em.
