Suspended for Skittles

A few weeks ago we looked at student First Amendment rights in regard to t-shirts in school. Here is a different kind of school rule causing a stir.

Michael Sheridan, an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut, was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.
School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a school wellness policy. Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president. He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive. What do you think?

I think that the schools punishments for this student are dumb. just because he bought some skittles from his friend does not mean that he should get his honors stripped from him and to be suspended for aone day. though he may have gone against teh schools policy i believe that the school could have found a better way to punish him.

I disagree with the punishment that the school gave this kid for purchasing skittles in school. Against the wellness policy? Give me a break! I think that it is rediculous to say that buying and eating skittles is against the wellness policy. Besides, stripping someone from their honors and their rank as class vice president seems like far too harsh of a punishment. Maybe a more legit punishment would have been to maybe take the candy away and tell him not to do it again because it is against policy?

The school policy is outrageous. They really cracked down on some poor kid who had no idea he was breaking school rules. Even if selling/buying candy at school is against the policy, the punishment that they gave him was way to harsh.

I personally think that his suspension is ridiculous! He should not have been stripped from his honors or class vice president for buying candy, yeah it was against the school rules but there are far worse things he could of done. he could have been buying something worse than that, such as i don't know...drugs. This punishment has gone way to far!!!!!!!!

I think that this punishment is pathetic. I don't think that breaking a schools wellness program is grounds for taking a students honors and class officer rank away. I beleive that there are far better ways to punish a student. What a piddly thing to be punished for in the first place.

I understand that schools have to strip students of some of their rights when they enter the school, i know there needs to be a sense of security and control in a public learning enviorment, however i think this school is crazy for treating skittles like Columbian pure Cocain is a little absurd. I really dont think the student was causing much harm to any of the other students as he was himself. -Jameson

I think it is retarded that they would do all of that because of a bag of skittles..IT'S A BAG OF SKITTLES!!!! Let the kid have some candy, it's not like he is going to get extremely overweight from one bag.. Some schools are just anal about some stuff, maybe a little TOO strict?!?!?

Its kind of ridiculous when you get suspended for buying candy from another student. Shouldn't the school be worried about other issues. I dont think he should've been punished when he didnt know that what he was doing was bad.

The school punishment for this purchasing some skittles is ridiculous. It is just a little bag of skittles that you are buying, I mean you can always go up town and buy some candy if you want anyway and sneak it into school. There is always a loop hole to everything. Yes the students shouldnt have been selling them if they knew it was against the rules in the school, but the punishment they gave is a little too out of hand.

I think that is so stupid that school stripped the boy of his honors and suspended him for one day just for buying a bag of skittles.

This school is hardcore. There is no way that this kid deserves this kind of punishment. Maybe a noon hour detention or something like that would be alright but the punishment that he recieved was just foolish.

This school is old school strict!!! How ridiculous is that to take away honors and title this student earned. He should have gotten alot less of a punishment for it. But having the title he did how did he not know about the rule.

This is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard of...getting suspended for buying some candy? Not only suspended but striped of his class office? Sorry, but if school officials are going to start this, they wont have many kids in school, because who wants to be in a school with such dumb rules. I hope this boy appeals this suspension and gets his rankings and office back. If i were him I'd transfer to another school. Let students live...they are young and don't need such harsh punishments.

I think that the school is being too harsh on this kid. He seems like a good student, and should not be treated like this by his school, reguardless of the rules. On the other hand, one could argue that the rule was cleary stated and whoever the student is, honors or not, he or she should be prosecuted in the same manner as everyone else.

First of all, I think that the principal or whoever gave him the punishment was a little harsh. I don’t think he did any harm by buying the Skittles. Getting stripped of his title and being banned from going to the honors student dinner was pretty harsh. But I guess if you do the crime, you pay the time.

That's pathetic. Skittles are freakin candy. If the skittles were like Cocaine laced skittles, then hey, go ahead and suspend the kid and take away any luxuries he may have had. I think that if anyone was to suspend a kid because he bought some skittles from some random kid, the principal or whoever was in charge should realize how minor of an offense it is so they can immediately do something about it. I'm gonna sell some skittles and stuff in school and see what happens. Mrs. Berg knows all about this illegal candy sales in school.

I think that it is ridiculous. The kid didn't know what he was doing was wrong and I don't blame him. The school should at least give him a second chance instead of punishing him so harshly the first time. Especially if he was the class vice president he must be a smart and respected kid they could have given him another chance. the wellness plan is okay i guess but to say he can't buy candy at school is dumb.

Obviously, the school needs to do a better job of making students aware of the rules, especially when they're so *ahem* irregular. You can get skittles all over the place. There's no reason for him to do this if he knew of the punishment. And holy crap... seriously? Suspended for buying candy? I hate to think what happened to the other kid, the one selling. What would they do if he was selling drugs!?! Hang him?

We should have honors dinners. I like food.

What kind of school would suspend a kid, take away his position of vice pres, and bar him from attending a honors dinner because he ate a freaking skittle. It's not like he hasn't had a skittle in his life, or that the bag was going to cause him to be an overweight good for nothing burden on society. This schools wellness plan seems to be overly strict. Maybe a warning, or just confiscate the candy, one bag of candy and they completely humiliate this kid because he needed some candy.

i think this is retarded. seriously its just candy and if they cant sell it they will just go and buy it before school than. so i dont know why thier are making a big deal out of this. and just some thought why did he get his punishment reduced just because he is a honor student. bs he should have the same penalty as everyone else. that is problem with society overacheviers allwalys have everyone attending to thier needs and problems. sorry i ranted a little bit.

OK... this is kinda weird. Rules are rules and students have to follow them or they have to pay the consequences. Students have no rights in school, they have privileges. There will always be rules in life, and some of them may seem unreasonable... that's the way it goes.

That has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!! Its not the end of the world if a kid buys skittles. Don't they have better things to worry about?!?! They went a little overboard with stripping his honors even if it was against the policy. I never thought a person could be screwed over because of candy...

I think that is retarted the kid got introuble for having a bag of candy.. Im sure he wouldnt of even bothered buying the candy if he knew he was oging ot get all that taken away. its not like he was smuggling in alchol or ciggys .. its Candy!

juggy said...

getting suspended for buying a bag of skittles is outrageous because candy isn't illegal so why do they make such a big deal out of it. it makes not sense that this would happen in a school they make it sound like it is just as bad as drugs or tobacco

i personally think that this suspension was ridiculous. All he did was buy candy sure it was against school rules but there way worst things that he could of did. And that poor boy had to lose his honors for it. That is sad and i cant believe the school did that. I think that the punishment that they gave him has gone way to far...

this is such a load! a kid can't even buy candy in school!? so what! if the teachers don't want him to eat it in class, fine! but you have to know that a no candy rule school wide is absurd. no one is going to follow it and it is just plain commen sence.

lol they suspended him for purchasing an illegal substance called skittles i find tat really really funny. the school needs to pull their heads out of you knwo what and see how ridiculous this is.

I agree with Blogger Conservative G the schools punshiment is dumb!

I think that schools are getting out of hand with there punishment styles. Leave the kids alone that are advertising things like candy. Now if he or she is wearing an alcohol advertising shirt punish them. Stay to the fighting and kind of things. That is more important to keep our schools safe.
