First One

Make sure you read the first blog/introduction!!

We all know the stories about buses and seating discrimination-Rosa Parks. Detroit Lakes is having its own busing problems. Read the story:

The Detroit Lakes school district is changing its bus routes after some students were teased.

Under the revised routes, a group of students from a mobile home park will no longer have to sit in the front seats.

A parent had complained that having those students sit in front of the bus had created a stigma and led to the students being teased.

For the last eight years, the bus had picked up students from the mobile home park -- located less than a mile from the school -- on its last stop on the route. Those students had to sit in the first three rows.

The district said it had assigned the seats because the stop is on a high-traffic road, and it saved time for the students to sit down quickly.

The new policy takes effect within the next 10 days.

What do you think? Is this discrimination based on economic class? Should the school change it route? What other options may the school come up with?

This example is not economic discrimination, it is just common sense. This stop is on a busy rode and for the safety of the bus and other vehicles it makes sense to have the children enter the bus and sit down as quickly as possible. I can understand that young children would want to sit near their friends on a bus but one mile is not enough time to have a conversation anyways. They definately should not waste time and money to change the bus routes.

I don’t believe that this is economic discrimination. Because the way the bus route goes, kids who get on the bus first get to pick their seats first. The three seats in the front are for those kids at the park because they are the last stop and because the road is so busy it’s easy to just have them quickly sit down and get going. I don’t think that the school should have to change the route but since parents are complaining, I think the best option would be to have a bus stop somewhere where there isn’t as much traffic. Then the kids could sit wherever they wanted and they wouldn’t have to quickly sit down. The school could also pick them up first so that they can just sit wherever they want as well.

It shouldn't be necessary to change the bus routes, but other changes do need to be made. I read a newspaper article about this where the busdriver not only allowed other students to call the kids from the trailer park names, but actually yelled at a student for trying to sit elsewhere, referring to him as "trailer park kid". I think the setup is silly, but I think the the biggest problem is with the bus driver.

This is not an example of economic discrimination. The mobile homes are less than a mile away if the parents have that big of a problem they can drive them to school. It dont make any sense to change the route so kids can sit else wheres. They will probably get picked on anyways. This would be a waste of money and time to change the bus route.

I do not believe that this is an economic discrimination. If you are the first one on the bus, obviously you are going to go to the back of the bus. If your the last one on the bus you are going to have to sit more towards the front. I agree with what Rachael said on how it makes sense that they want the kids to sit down quickly to get going because the road is so busy. Besides those kids are only on the bus for about a minute so why would it matter if you sit in the front for one minute or in the back for a minute?

I do not believe that this is economic discrimination. If you are the first one on the bus, then obviously you go towards the back of the bus. If you are one of the last people on the bus, people arent just going to move out of their seat in the back so that you can sit down. You are the last ones on the bus, a mile away from the school, why would it matter where you sit for a minute on the road.

I don't think this is economic discrimination because it makes more sense to have them sit down quickly on a busy road. It's more safe than waiting on a road for numerous people to find a seat. They are the last people to get on the bus which makes no sense in them complaining about where they sit. They are only on the re for a few minutes anyways and its only fair that the first people on should sit wherever they please.

I believe that the kids who get picked up at the trailer park shouldnt have to be forced to sit in certain seats just because of where they get picked up. It shouldnt be to hard for the school district to move the bus route so the bus can just pull in to the trailer park to pick up the kids. If it is that big of a deal so the bus driver has to make the kids sit in front so he doesnt stop traffic why not have the bus go into the trailer so he wont be hlding up the traffic and this way the kids who are being picked up have a choice of where they want to sit.

This is not economic discrimination. A bus driver can have students sit wherever he or she pleases. It only makes sense for students that get on last to sit in the front of the bus, and get off first because it will save time for the bus driver to do his route. The children that had to sit at the front must have experienced a tramatizing experiences, especially when they are only on for 5 minutes.

I think that everyone is being a little B**** about this the bus driver is just trying to get things going. The trailer park is located on a busy highway so he has reserved seats for the members of the trailer park to sit down. I really don't see the problem there, thats just being nice. So i think that they are just being gay.

I don't believe that this is economic discrimination. But I don't think kids that happen to get picked up in a trailer park should have to sit in the front. I see that it is easier for the bus driver so he is not holding up traffic. And also that they are the last kids on the route, it makes no sense so change the route and waste more money. But like Don said they don't need to be called "the trailer park kids."

i don'think that this is economic discrimination because the the bus route is a busy and i think that for the safety of all the kids on the bus and other drivers on the road it would make for sence for the kids to just get on the bus and just sit down as quickly as they can. I dont think that the school should have to change there whole bus route for a couple of kids. They should just tell there parents the situation and tell them how is goes.

This isn't economic discrimination. The way things are run on that particular bus, is for the safety of the kids on the bus along with other drivers. If the road is busy, everyone has to quickly board the bus and sit down. The trailer park was only a mile away anyway so it shouldn't be such a big deal to sit in the front seats. It was unnecessary to change the bus routes. The kids should just deal with it.

This is not an example of economic discrimnation. The first three seats in the front are for the kids at the park because its easy for them to sit down and for safety. The kids could sit where ever if the road wasnt so busy but the bus driver just wanted to hurry and not hold up the traffic.

people are overreacting this is not economic discrimination. if its that big of a deal i guess these children should just move to anotehr part of town or go to a school that is far away so they can get on the bus at 5 in the morning instead of 7:45. stop whining.

This is not discrimination; it is just dumb that people get their panties all in a bunch over basically nothing. They are on a busy road and it doesn’t make sense for them to be holding up traffic by waiting for the kids find a seat way in the back or whatever. Just because they live in a trailer doesn’t mean that everyone is out to get them.

Get on the bus, sit down. Wait til you get to school. Get off the bus. Deal with it. If you really care that much then don't ride the bus. Kids should just learn how to be a man (woman) and learn from Rosa Parks. Don't give up your seat. I have a dream, that one day, all kids will be able to sit on the bus in harmony and without discord.

I don't think they should change the bus routes. I have to ride the bus an hour and I would love if i got picked up last even if I had to sit in the front. I don't think this is economic discrimination. I think the school should do something about the teasing rather than change the bus routes.

i would hope that this isn't and example of discrimintation, but on the other hand i think the coincidence is to strong not to be one. This is just plain stupid either way.

I don't think that the students are being discriminated because of their economic status. I think that the bus driver had the frot seats reserved for them because he didn't want to hold up traffic being that the stop was on a busy road. The trailer court families having students riding this bus are just being a little to touchy. I also think that this is a rediculous reason to change a bus route.

It seems like the minorities will find anything they can to call it discrimination. The front seats were not assigned to them because they live in a trailer park, but because its the easiest spot for them to sit. I don't think that the school should change the routes because someone thinks this is economic descrimination when its not.
