A proposal allowing patients with cancer and other debilitating illnesses to use marijuana has cleared its final legislative committee.
The 13-4 vote by the House Ways and Means Committee means the bill's next stop is the House floor.
The Senate approved the medical marijuana bill last year.
But Governor Tim Pawlenty remains opposed because police and sheriffs say the legislation would make it harder for them to enforce drug laws.
Those who oppose the bill say it would make marijuana more accessible to those who aren't sick. Remember the news clip we watched about California and its medical marijuana problems??? What do you think about having it come to MN?

I think that we have sufficient pain pills to help sick patients. It would be so difficult to stop people who are not sick from getting drugs. People who are sick could sell the drugs. It is a nice idea as far as helping people deal with pain but the problems this bill would cause would be huge. They need to not allow this bill to be passed because getting high on marijuana will not help any sick person get well.
The legislators must know more than we do. I for one don't see what the difference would be between using pain pills and using marijuana. It's pretty much just an excuse to use an otherwise illegal drug. There must be some underlying cause for legalizing it other than it's obvious "numbing" properties. There are substitutes for it. An addiction to weed just adds to the list of patients' health problems.
this isent a big deal because marijuana is the easest drug to get
this will help alot of people
I think this would be a very bad mistake...the law enforcement would have to work allot harder to enforce laws and there has to be other perscribed drugs that can help with pain. This is just an excuse for people in our state to use a drug that should be illegal.
I think marjuana is not the answer for cancer etc. treatment. This would be opening a door to others to get it easier. People who dont need the drug will try getting it. We have other drugs that have worked for many years we dont need to add to Americas problems.
I think passing this bill would make it alot harder for law enforcement to take any actions. I think passing this bill would do alot for those with cancer etc. but it would cause bigger problems than just giving to those with cancer etc.
I think that we have efficient pain pills and ect. to help sick people. I think it would also be difficult to stop people who are not sick from getting the drugs. It would also be hard for law enforcement to set there laws and help do there jobs when you can use it.They wouldnt no whos sick or not. I dont think that they should allow this bill to be passed because getting high will not help a sick people get any better it will only take away the pain for a little while and then the pain will return . then i think addiction willstart in
Legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes would make it extremely hard to enforce drug laws. This being said, marijuana is a common drug and many people use it anyways. I personally know someone who uses marijuana for medicinal purposes and that person believes it helps. I guess we can't say what is right and wrong because we do not have those types of debilitating diseases like cancer, and etc.
Medical Marijauana should not be allowed it would just be abused. People dont need another escuse just to smoke weed. If people have been able to survive thus far with out legalized pot then they can continue with out it.
I think that is it good for the people that need it but the people that abuse it should be fined.
Marijuana Shmarijuana! Thats what I say! People would not be benefited if marijauna was legalized. There are so many other ways to cure sicknesses that it would be sick if we allowed marijuana. The cops would have a lot harder time keeping drugs under control and we dont need that!
i think that we have enough pain pills and other things that we have now, so that we don't need to have the marijuana bill passed. There will be more problems with this becuase every one will be saying that they are using if for their illness and they won't actually need this. i agree about what they say that it will be harder for the drug laws.
I think its a bad idea. Its a step in the wrong direction. Law enforcement have been trying for a long time to get rid of drugs and legalizing the drugs makes it less possible to get rid of. There are other options for their pain and what not. Them getting addicted to weed will just add to the problem.
Oh my god it would be so sweet if this went through.
we dont need medical marjiuana cuz there are enough problems as it is in this country why add to the chaos and stress of people especially law enforcement.
i think we can find ways other then marijuana to help people with their sickness. Obviously people are just going to abuse this way to much. if its ok for people to have marijuana for their sickness its going to make teens and everyone else think its ok to have it also. theres already so many people who do it i think its just going to get worse and it leads to a lot bigger problems. i know people who quit marijuana and turned to meth because they werent getting the same "pleasure". so YES i think its a very bad idea!
I think this is a great idea it will really help people out with there problems. Marijuana is one of the best drugs to treat almost anything. Its in just about every pill. Passing this bill will help alot of pepople. <======(_)
I dont believe that we need to legalize marijuana to help the sick people. It is a stupid idea. As megan had said people will just sell it, or make more of it. we have sufficient enough pills for the sick so we dont need to legalize an illegal drug. We can find other ways to help the sick.

I don't think they should pass this because it will cause more problems than it will help. People would abuse it and it would just be chaotic
I guess I honestly believe that it's someone elses body, I can't control that and if a person wants to use drugs and risk harming themselves it's not my place to say. Of course, it does put others at danger. I won't mind the decision either way, in this day and age it's not hard to get marijuana so legalizing it doesn't seem that big of a deal.
I think that we don't need to stoop that low to make maijuana legal for patients. There are plenty of pain pills and other ways to ease the pain. Making marijuana legal will just make it harder to enforce drug laws. I think it will increase the amount of people who get it illegally.
I personally do not know how effective marijuana is for medicinal purposes. if it is as effective as people say it is then yes i think it could be highly beneficial for those with medical ailments. I do understand that law enforcement would be much more difficult and would probly create some new court rulings and laws but either way its hard to stop these things anyways. from what i have seen in this area many people dont even consider marijuana an illegal threat. I know highschool kids and civil leaders alike who use it for recreational purposes. Marijuana is acquired just as easily as ciggarettes are acquired by minors.

There are healthier and more efficient ways to relieve pain. If marijuana wasn't considered to be such a gateway drug this wouldn't be a problem, but if people seeking pain relief can find it through marijuana without the risk of addiction to this and other drugs then there is no reason this bill shouldn't pass. Obviously, this is a matter of debate. I think the bill should pass.
I think u can use something else for pain but then again im not a doctor.
i think if people really do need it then doctors can give it to them!
I think this is a bad idea to legalize marijuana, because it will make the job for Law Enforecment harder to do. They already have a hard job to do as it is. Sure it might drop our deficit down some but will it help people out. Don't think so. It will not help people out, it will put them in an altered state of mind for a few hours that is all.
I think it will make the problem of Marijuana worse like it did in California. There are enough pain pills that people can get for their illness why do they have to make marijuana legal. People will most likely sell the marijuana and attempt to make a profit off of it. I remember watching the news clip and it sounded dumb to me when they legalized something like marijuana to people.
i think that if it is for people who actully need it to cope with thier injurys and such yes give it to them. cause i know that a lot of these pain pills now days are a lot more addictive than weed. and if they actully need it for the pain they will not be selling it so what the big deal. just give them a card saying they need it and leave it at that.
I think this bill will just give addicts another way to buy drugs and a MUCH easier way to access getting marijuana. passing this bill will allow there to be more drugs on teh streets and it will be harder for the police to inforce the laws against drugs
i feel taht medical marijuana is a good idea. pain pills are not all natural and can really screw up teh body and leave a big addiction. marijuana is all natural and it can leave an addiction but i feel taht that addiction is easier to break than pain pills. the whole people can get their hands on marijuana easier if this goes through may be. i know ways to get pot. im not saying im a pot head but it is easier to get your hands on marijuana than some may think. course i do have friends from park rapids menahga wolf lake sebeka and wadena so i guess that helps. i personally think peopel are jsut such big pussies they cant take the pain. ive had many oppertunities to take pain killers and i didnt. cause i dont want taht in my body only time i took pain killer was after oral sergury i took one. now if you are having your leg cut off or something for a full knee or hip replace ment than i think you should have a pin killer. i think pain killers hsould just not be prescribed as much.
what the dickens do these morons think they are doing legalizing marjuana for medical use... member the california video?like mrs berg said? the pot smoking morons can say their freaking back hurts and get a not from a doctor and get marjauna....go eat some asprin potheads.......... this is outrageous...
Medical pot would not work as well as some people think it would. all that it would do is create an easyier way for potheads to get thier drugs. California is having major problems with thier medical marajuana so minnesota should learn from californias mistakes.
I think that this is stupid...We have tons of pills out there why would u use marijuana its already a big problem and now u want more people to do it. I hope it doesn't pass its going to be such a pain to try and keep a handle on the drugs. I would think the pills would be better for you and safe.
Medical marijuana probably isn't the best idea because more than likely it will just up the illegal, non-medical use for marijuana and many people will get prescriptions for bogus pains and whatever just to use it.
I wonder what exactly marijuana would help with compared with a regular pain pill. We dont really need any more drug use then we already have. Especially when pain pills are so abused.
I feel that medical marijuana would be a great idea. It is an all natural drug that is not chemically addicting. Look at all the pain killers that they are subscribing right now to patients that dont need them are getting addicted.
