John McCain presented two ideas yesterday.
1)For the federal government to free people from paying gasoline taxes this summer.
To help people weather the downturn immediately, McCain urged Congress to institute a "gas-tax holiday" by suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He also renewed his call for the United States to stop adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and thus lessen to some extent the worldwide demand for oil.
Combined, he said, the two proposals would reduce gas prices, which would have a trickle-down effect, and "help to spread relief across the American economy."
2) The federal government should ensure that college students can secure loans this fall.
Lawmakers, students and financial experts are worried that the credit crisis might make it more difficult for students and their families to find loans. Nearly two dozen lenders have dropped out of the federally backed student loan program.
(He also proposed some ideas to reform the tax system in the US and raise the deduction for dependent children from $3500 to $7000.)
What do you think of his ideas????

I think that these ideas sound great. But with a country already over 9 trillion dollars in debt can we really afford not to get this tax. As far as the student loans, I agree that every student should be able to receive loans. Just because some kids with bad credit did not pay back their loans does not mean that the next kid should not get the opportunity to go to college. These are good ideas, my only concern is with the national debt.
I think this idea is great! I would love to save money on gas, especially since it has gotten so expensive in the past few months. Also i really like the idea of making college more accessible for students. Getting these loans means a bright future for myself and all the other students in college. This sounds really great!
I THINK that the gas tax is part of life even if it does stink. We have a big debt and the government has to get money someway... people can car pool and not drive so much. About the loans... I think that all students should be able to get student loans. how else are we goin to be able to boost the economy - people need to be able to get a decent education which will benefit the economy in the future.
this would make traviling alot nicer for people who likes to go on vaction and travil alot
i would love this but it would suck in the winter because i snomoible so it would suck
i think these are great ideas, even though we are in debt. i know i don't like paying so much for gas, and i think it's a great idea that college students will be able to take out lonas because it's hard to make it now adays.
i think its crazy that gas prices are as high as they are! it makes no sense because this economy is goin down as it is so why they do this it is BS
This sounds awesome!!!! McCain is finally starting to make me happier. If he gets into office I hope that he will be able to lower gas costs, as I will be traveling home on the weeknds and will have to travel 150 miles. I am glad he is going to help out college students. We need all the help we can get as the expenses of college are going through the roof. Keep it up McCain and you MAY get my VOTE on ELECTION DAY!!!
I think that this idea is super great. i would love to be able to not have to pay so much in gas and save money for college. It gets really expensive driving back and forth to work in pr everyday. I think that i would also be a little concern about the national debt since we have reached the highest amount 9 trillion.but they know more then i do on the subject i just hope they make good choice. And with the students loans i was also getting worrried that i wouldnt be able to recieve any. This sounds like a really great idea
I think its a great idea but it needs to go way down. So i can save money for college.
I think these are great ideas even though we are in debt. Gas prices are outrageous. Every student should be able to recieve loans. College is so expensive now and allot harder to afford it.
YAY FOR PAYING LESS. Its cool but I honestly don't think that it will happen, And when summer ends people will be mad because it will go back up! So Pshhhhh its pointless
I agree that it would be better if we could save money on gas but i also agree with megan that we should be taking into consideration the debt we have.
I think it'd be good to cut the taxes on gas even if it is only for three months. Maybe by that time we'll be getting back on our feet a bit or have some ideas of how to help the economy. It'd also be good to make getting loans easier and more accessible for everyone, I hate to see us teenagers throwing our lives away just because of a loan.
Basically, I'm happy about these things. I think we've got a long way to go before he could possibly get these to happen though. I'm not getting my hopes up of cheaper gas. I mean come on, it's like 3.49. might as well just be mad about it going up and pretend to be surprised when it does go down. As for the loan thing, i think that kids should go to college any way possible, and more loan providers would be great for those who otherwise can't pay for schooling.
I think his ideas are sweet. I like the gas tax one becuase it will make it seem like we are paying less for gas. it will also help a lot of people because many people go on vacation and go boating and such. I also believe that students who cannot afford to go to college shouldn't be denied an education becuase they can't afford it. I think that there should be more loans with better interest rates so that we can afford to further our education.
yeah go john mcCain. I would love to save money on gas. It is way to expensive to do anything or go anywhere anymore. But the again i agree with andrew, our government does need money, and that is basically how they get there money, just lower the prices already1 Making college more accessible for student would be a great idea. College is so expensive it is hard to earn so much, and you go into so much debt just to get it. In Finland college is free to all student, so i dont see why america cant do anything about there college funds.
I think that sound cool. I would love to see the prices of gas to drop that would mean that it would cost me a lot less to have fun lol. But along with maggyjo has to say our country probably cant aford it.
I think it a good idea and gas needs to go down!Other wise i cannot drive my camaro anymore lol i think its a good idea
I think that temporary suspending the gas tax for three months would be great. It will not only save people money but it will also bust the economy. People will have to spend less at the pump, they will spend more at the grocery store, clothing store and they will take mor trips. I think it is a great idea.
Our economy sucks. Removing the gas taxes and lowering prices is as bad as giving the oil companies a subisidy. The effects of such a bill would be so insignificant and so quickly destroyed that it's completely worthless. There are far better things to do with that much money.
Student loans are essential to the prosperity of our nation. If we're lucky some of the college grads will grow up and get us out of this mess, but in all likelihood the debt isn't going down. Ever.
i do not usually like republican but this makes me like McCain just a little bit more than i did before. i think it is a great idea to suspend the gas taxes. everyone is busy travling in the summer and the last thing they wnat to get kick in the nuts by is the price of gas. and the school loans he wants to make sure that all students are getting them. what a great guy :)
well i dont knwo what to say about the gas being so expensive. once again we are faced with increased gas prices and there is not alot peopel can do about it. i really dont care if i get taxed on gas anymore. i ahve pretty much given up on complaining about high gas prices. i do feel taht fuel consumption is starting to level off now that gas is so high. i think maybe they should tax people down in the cities that own hummers and escalades and they dont even go off road with them or haul anything waste of gas there. the less gas we use the more supply we will have. less demand. price should go down if there is a surplus. yay college im getting my loans soon. no one should be denied and education. mccain isnt that bad. if it werent for the prowar as part of his campaign i may vote for him. but im sick of war.
Hey now this guy has finnally thought of something worth doing!!!!!!!!!! i would not mind a bit if they slacked off in tthe tax department... though dropping the tax will cut billions out of the federal government's budget...who really cares!!!! they got enough money...they need to quit spending so much on worthless programs anyhow.... Who cares about making college more accessible ....... i don't ahahahah
I think that mccain has brought forth two brilliant ideas. Both of them would take some stress off the shoulders of finatial issues. Lowering the gas tax can help everyone and making student loans more afoordable can also have a big impact.
I think that both of these ideas sound like a good idea. I would love to save money on gas with the gas prices now its not even worth going in to work for a couple hour u have to have the full 8 to even make it worth driving there. Also i like his idea on what they are doing to student loans kids want to go to college but they need help and loans are the only way they can go don't stop kids from going to school we need the loans so that we can have a better life.
I like the gas tax cut, but i think we need to attack the issue of high energy costs at the base. Crude oil, it is killing us all. As far as college loans go i think it is vital for everyone to be able to access money in order to ensure a strong futute. last thing we need it an america with dumb citizens and no energy sources.
I think that these ideas are really good but can we really afford it. I hope he can also find a long term resolution to our gas prices. That would be really good.
I think these are good ideas because the price of gas right now is unreal. Gas is pretty much the only thing that i spend my money on right now so it would be relief to see it go down to at least under three dollars a gallon. It would also be great if it was a bit easier to get some loan money for college.
I think that all three of these ideas are great! Though i do agree with Megan with her worries about the national debt, something has to be done to stimulate the economy. Giving all students a chance to attend college is a great way to stimulate the economy, how else can they get the jobs that require education? Breaks from gas tax also means a little more money in each citizens pocket. All of the little savings for each citizen will add up and can have an impact on the stimulation of the economy.
this is a good ideal i hate what i am paying for gas now they shouldnt have a tax break they have money and we dont they should feel sorry for us and give in so we can live
